What is a nativity?
“Nativity” means “the occasion of a person’s birth” and comes from the same Latin root as the word “native.” With a capital N, “Nativity” is understood to mean the birth of Jesus. Nativity scenes depict this occasion, in a stable with animals and shepherds in attendance. Sometimes angels and the visiting Wise Men, or Magi, are also included.
Does the nativity go by other names?
A nativity scene is also called a crèche (sounds like “kresh”), meaning “crib” or “cradle,” or a Bethlehem.
Do only Christians celebrate the nativity?
Jesus is honored by people of other faiths, particularly Muslims. The Quran includes the stories of Jesus’ birth and that of His mother, Mary. Muslims honor Jesus as a prophet who worked many miracles, but do not worship Him as Christians do, nor celebrate His birth.
Why is the nativity displayed in Monument Square?
In 2004, Bob Wortock and 16 local churches gained a permit to erect a nativity scene on Monument Square. Bob expressed the hope that the display would “help unify people, and that others could put up their expression of faith, and people could talk and be open” about their beliefs, as guaranteed by the First Amendment.
Is there parking near the Nativity?
Yes! There are limited spaces on Monument Square itself as well as on the surrounding streets. Watch for One Way signs.
What is the Christmas Coalition?
The Christmas Coalition is a joyful, community-driven non-profit that brings the heart of the season to life each year in Downtown Racine. Every Christmas, we proudly set up a beautiful Nativity scene in Monument Square—a cherished tradition that shines a light on the season’s message of hope, love, and togetherness. Our mission is to celebrate the spirit of Christmas by bringing people from all walks of life together, honoring the story at the heart of the holiday while embracing the warmth and unity it inspires in us all.

The nativity crèche beautifully represents the birth of Jesus Christ, symbolizing hope, love, and divine presence. Each figure tells a story of humility and faith. More than a decoration, it’s a powerful reminder of God’s gift to humanity and the true meaning of Christmas—peace, joy, and salvation through Christ.
